This small town of around 55,000 inhabitants is famous for its famous Bridge over the River Kwai. Although it may not at first glance appear to be the jewel in the crown of Thailand's provinces, it is nevertheless the region's main economic center. Kanchanaburi, some 2 hours' drive from Bangkok, is not only a tourist destination for foreigners, but also a holiday resort for Thais themselves. The town, especially the tourist district near the river, is very pleasant. It is also an interesting base for exploring the region and its various national parks.
