The ancient Khmer capital of Lopburi, 150 km north of Bangkok, has long been a garrison town. Its palaces have been restored over the centuries by successive kings. The remains, in the "Lopburi" style, reflect the purest expression of ancient Khmer art. The great king Narai, contemporary of Louis XIV, made the city of Lopburi his summer residence. He left his mark here with buildings that reveal the influence of French architecture. The city is famous for its free-roaming monkeys, which have taken up residence all over the city. Beware, they can be aggressive and thieving.
