Some 50 km west of the capital, this town of 50,000 inhabitants is one of the oldest in the country. It's well known to Thais for its Phra Phatom Chedi, a monumental stupa that seems to tower over the city, and its friendly night market. There are also a number of floating markets, including the Don Wai Floating Market and Lam Phaya Floating Market, as well as boat tours of the Khlong Maha Sawat, whose communities have preserved their ancient way of life. Even if the city doesn't shine for its tourist attractions, a visit can be an opportunity to discover a more authentic Thailand.
