300 km from Rio Gallegos, the arrival in El Calafate marks the entrance to a more deserted Patagonia, swept by an often icy wind. El Calafate has based its tourist development on its proximity to one of the country's stars: the Perito Moreno glacier, one of the thirteen glaciers that dot the national park and lead to Lago Viedma and Lago Argentino. Considered as a must-see, El Calafate is however invaded by mass tourism: once you have visited the glacier, don't stay long!
