At 1,200 meters above sea level, "Salta la Belle" is a large and beautiful city at the foot of the Andes, with nearly 780,000 inhabitants. The population is reputedly very Catholic, and its economic and political elites are considered the most conservative in the country. The atmosphere is felt in the city, it is a city a little chic, some would say pretentious. It owes its nickname to the word sagta which means "beautiful" in the indigenous Aymara language. If you are frustrated after a long Argentinian journey, very rich in natural beauties but much poorer in architecture, Salta should reconcile you with the Argentinian cities, the buildings are beautiful and well preserved, and the city has some well endowed museums. Strangely enough, it has been spared from earthquakes and is a beautiful example of colonial architecture, characterized by its single story. You can spend at least a full day visiting the city, before embarking on the fabulous excursions possible in the region.
