Located on the Andes mountain range, the road to get there is also exceptional. This park, which is located about ten kilometers from the Chilean border, is named after its highest peak, the Cerro Aconcagua (6,962 m), nicknamed "the Roof of the Americas", because it is the highest of the Andean chain and of the entire continent. It was the Swiss-Italian Mathias Zurbriggen who conquered the summit of Aconcagua in 1897. The massif is covered by eternal snows and glaciers, yet it was once inhabited by prehistoric tribes, and later by the Huarpes, indigenous people of Cuyo and the Incas in the middle of the 15th century.
