65 km southwest of Batticaloa, 183 km from Kandy, 134 km northeast of Badulla and 63 km northwest of Pottuvil. The city has a population of just over 40,000. Ampara is the capital of a district composed of 20 divisions, one of the characteristics of which is its strong ethnic and religious diversity. The majority of its inhabitants are Sinhalese, while the coastal areas of the district are predominantly Moorish and Tamil. In 2012, Ampara, the district capital with a population of 20,300, was 98 per cent Sinhalese, while Kalmunai, the most populous town in the district (106,800), was 98 per cent Moorish and Tamil.
