138 km from Trincomalee and 70 km from Ampara. With a population of about 92,500, Batticaloa is a very lively and commercial city, whose lagoon and its surroundings are not to be missed. The population is predominantly Tamil but also includes Moors, Burghers, Sinhalese and some Veddas. Approximately 68% are Hindu, 25% are Muslim, 6% are Christian and less than 1% are Buddhist and other religions. Bruised by long years of war, "Batti" and its region are also among the areas of the island severely affected by the 2004 tsunami (2,840 dead, 2,375 injured and 1,033 missing).
