109 km from Polonnaruwa, 106 km from Anuradhapura and 257 km from Colombo. A peninsula surrounded by three bays (Inner Harbour in the south, Dutch Bay in the northeast and Back Bay in the northwest), Trincomalee ("Trinco" for the locals) was, for nearly 2,000 years, renowned and envied for the beauty of its natural harbor. The major attraction is Fort Frederick, perched on the eastern tip of the city and whose location offers spectacular views. Although two beaches (Back Bay and Dutch Bay) are in the heart of the city, the proximity of the harbor and the relative pollution of the area make them less than ideal for swimming. From May to October, Trincomalee is a good base for dolphin and whale watching.
