254 km from Colombo, 53 km from Anuradhapura, 77 km from Mannar, 97 km from Trincomalee and 139 km from Jaffna. Vavuniya is an important communication hub and is the gateway to the northern province and Jaffna. It represents, with more than 100 000 inhabitants, one of the big cities of the northern half of the island. Its population is mostly Tamil and Hindu, but there are also Muslim and Catholic communities, as evidenced by the religious buildings of the city. Its large green mosque, Usmanuiya Masjid, will not fail to attract your attention. Vavuniya was, during the civil war that tore the country apart, considered the border between the LTTE forces and the Sri Lankan army. It was also the terminus of the Northern Line train at that time. Today Vavuniya, despite its size, does not really offer much to see to the traveler, apart from its mosques, temples, churches, and its small archaeological museum
