12 kilometers northwest of Polonnaruwa, this small town near Minneriya National Park offers some interesting accommodations, including three charming or upscale hotels. Wild elephants can sometimes be seen on the road. The main attraction in the area is the Giritale Tank, or Giritale Wewa, built by King Aggabodhi II (608-618). It is believed to have been renovated later by King Parakramabahu the Great (1153-1186). Thereafter it underwent multiple renovations during the colonial era. The Giritale Wewa was considered the deepest reservoir on the island during the reign of the capital Polonnaruwa
