This Hindu temple has been named Shiva Devala 2 to distinguish it from the one located at the entrance of the site. It is said to be the oldest monument in Polonnaruwa, built during the Chola period in the 10th century, when the South Indian invaders founded the city. The structure, entirely made of stone, has kept the trace of fine carvings. The temple also shows evidence of restoration, using the same technique as that employed at Angkor, which consisted of dismantling the entire structure and replacing the missing parts with new ones in order to preserve the building.
