116 km south of Colombo lies Galle (pronounced gol), the fourth largest city in the country (about 80,000) and one of the most attractive in its historical part. Today, the old town of Galle and its fortifications are listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site: it is said to be the largest surviving Dutch fortress in the world. The buildings of the fort have a remarkably well-preserved colonial architecture. The place exudes an enchanting perfume of nostalgia and it is a pleasure to stroll through the streets of this unique place where the memory of the East and the West mingle
