43 km south of Colombo. The history of Kalutara begins in the 11th century, when a South Indian prince named Vickrama Pandya made it his capital. It continues in the 13th century when King Parakramabahu II ordered the planting of a fringe of coconut trees along the coastline from Kalutara to Bentota, thus initiating a handicraft based on the weaving of palm fibers. The tourist attraction of the city has remained focused on this basketry craft, reputed to be exceptional on the island, and on the presence of the superb Kalutara Chaitya & Bodhiya temple.
