Nestled between the Couze river and terraced hillsides, Champeix was, until the 19th century, a prosperous wine-growing town of over 2,000 inhabitants. Affected for the first time by mildew in 1895, the vines were gradually uprooted and the town suffered a sharp demographic decline. The phenomenon was only gradually reversed from 1950 onwards. Champeix now has 1,400 inhabitants. In the center, the wine growers' houses are still present. However, it is the castle of Marchidal, overlooking the village, and the development of the hillsides into gardens and cultivated terraces that make the small town attractive to tourists.
