Dehiwala and Mount Lavinia joined together as one municipality over 40 years ago and today they form the second largest city in Sri Lanka, with 246,000 inhabitants spread over 2,109 hectares. Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia is separated from Colombo by the Dehiwala Canal which forms the northern boundary. The southern boundary is marked by Borupana Road. Beyond this is the town of Moratuwa. These two boundaries are 6.5 km apart and can be easily reached by following Galle Road which runs south from Colombo along the coast. Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia has 29 wards, including Attidiya, Kalubowile, Kohuwela, Nedimala and Ratmalana.
