The National Art Gallery is located next to the National Museum. It is divided into three exhibition halls. The main gallery displays a permanent collection of portraits and landscapes by international artists. The other two galleries are designed to host temporary exhibitions of Sri Lankan artists. It is estimated that there are about 40 renowned Sri Lankan artists and 200 works exhibited or housed at the National Art Gallery.

The venue also hosts the Colombo Art Biennale, the last edition of which took place in late 2016.
