At the foot of the Grand-Bénare, this islet of about 500 inhabitants was originally discovered by brown slaves who had taken refuge there. Floating in balance between clouds and vertiginous ramparts, at an altitude of 1,100 m, Îlet-à-Cordes looks like the end of the world, whose isolation is the historical reason for its existence. The village takes its name from the fact that it had to be reached by using rope ladders made of fork lianas. Today it is the paradise of lentils and Cilaos wine. The lentil fields, following the relief of the soil, extend all around the village and represent a large part of the production of the circus.
