Saint-Gilles-les-Hauts is a village just a few minutes from the beaches and hiking trails, making it an attractive alternative to the warmer, more expensive Bas. The history of this large Hauts village is closely linked to that of the Desbassayns and Villèle families. This great 19th-century planting family owned land stretching from Saint-Gilles-les-Hauts to Saint-Gilles-les-Bains. Today, the Villèle estate and museum are the focal point of the area, as the site has become a historical museum of housing and slavery. Saint-Gilles-les-Hauts also boasts one of the island's three golf courses.
