The last refuge of the Carib Indians, this town attached to Sainte-Marie is known for its basketry know-how. The small town had long been the refuge of the maroons, slaves fleeing from the habitations who became refugees high up on the mornes. Legend has it that Morne-des-Esses is today one of the headquarters of the island's sorcerers and quimbois. Urban legend or not, still, the small town flows peaceful days, dominating the Atlantic coast and offering breathtaking views of the sea and the surrounding banana fields. A most endearing farming village.
