Naga is located 380 kilometers south of Manila and 100 kilometers north of Legaspi City. This city of 210,000 inhabitants takes its name from the narra tree that covered the surrounding area when the Spaniards discovered the city in 1573. It has established itself as the religious, administrative and economic center of the Bicol region. It is also a renowned university center, giving the town a lively atmosphere. Finally, the town of Naga is world-famous for hosting the largest pilgrimage dedicated to the Virgin Mary in Southeast Asia. In September, thousands of pilgrims make their way to the Penafrancia sanctuary, where the festivities last for two weeks (needless to say, if you want to visit Naga during this period, you'll need to plan ahead).
