The capital of theaimag, 1,636 km from Ulaanbaatar, is located at an altitude of 1,710 meters. It has the double status of city and sum (department or district). It is the fifth most populated city in Mongolia, and it is mainly populated by Kazakhs, a Muslim minority. Its atmosphere is very influenced by Central Asia. Many signs and advertisements are written in Kazakh, drawing from both Kazakh and Cyrillic alphabets. Mosques point their minarets to the sky; one of them, located in a complex called Dubai City, was financed by funds from the United Arab Emirates.
