Located more than 1,000 km from Ulaanbaatar, Uliastai is one of the most isolated provincial capitals in Mongolia. It was built at an altitude of 1 760 meters. Surrounded by mountains on three sides and cut in its center by the Chigistei river, it is a small city a little sleepy but relatively pleasant because of its geographical situation. Unfortunately, nothing remains of the origins of the city, one of the oldest in Mongolia, which was founded by the Manchus in 1733 to serve as a military base in the region. As for the architecture, it presents today a mixture of Soviet buildings, ger and Mongolian wooden huts.
