Founded under the Uyghur Empire in 751, this city, now in ruins, was an administrative capital and a trading center. The site, nicknamed "the black ruins" because of the color of the stones used, suggests, by its size, the power of the original citadel. Only a few outer walls, a white stupa and the remains of the palace of the kagan, the local clan chief, remain today. The ground preserves the traces of an elaborate irrigation system, allowing water to be brought in from rivers located several kilometers away. Irrigation systems were a technique well mastered by the Uyghurs.
