Travel Guide Nature Reserve Of Khognokhan

In the south of theaimag, Khogno Khan Nature Reserve covers an area of 470 km² and is located on the border of the three provinces of Bulgan, Ovörkhangai and Tuv. It is a picturesque region of mountains, forests, steppes, taiga, Gobi desert and mineral springs, all in one place, which is also called Elsen Tasarkhai. It is located 280 km from Ulaanbaatar, on the main road to Kharkhorin. It takes about 3 hours and a half from the capital to get there.Around this protected mountain, you can visit a lot of interesting natural and cultural sites. There are also many walks to organize, including the one that leads to the top of the highest mountain of the reserve, at 1 967 meters. Another route, at the foot of the southern slope, leads to the small monastery of Övgön. The latter was destroyed in the 17th century by a rival of Zanabazar, the first living Buddha of Mongolia. Its reconstruction nearby allowed it to open again in the early 1990s. Since then, a small monastic activity keeps it alive.
