Founded in 1940, this border town of 23,000 inhabitants is the capital of Selengeaimag and is located at the confluence of the Orkhon and Selenge rivers, two of the country's most important waterways. The city is named after the hero of the 1921 revolution who, with the support of Communist Russia, managed to drive out the Chinese and White Russians who had settled in the country. It was Sükhbaatar who proclaimed the independence of Mongolia in July 1921, in the central square of Ulaanbaatar, which now bears his name. All travelers who enter Mongolia via the Trans-Mongolian will pass through this city, which has experienced in recent years a significant population growth, due to its proximity to the border. It remains to be seen if it deserves a stopover. For those who have planned to stay a few weeks in Mongolia, it is better to pass. For the others, it can always be interesting to go to the market of a small town and to soak up the pleasant and quiet atmosphere of urban centers in the Mongolian countryside.
