On the Bolivian border, Brasiléia is a 5 hour bus ride south of the Rio Branco. Like many cities here, Brasiléia is a territory that belonged to a former rubber plantation, on July 3, 1910, initially called Brasilia. In 1943, the name of the city was changed because it had the same name as the new federal capital. The current name is a derivative of Brazil and hiléia (forest). From the Bolivian town of Cobija on the other side of the border (hot and humid, regularly flooded, sometimes cut off from the world in the rainy season), regular bus connections, in the dry season, to La Paz, Santa Cruz, via Riberalta.
