Jericoacoara (Jeri to its friends) is Brazil's kitesurfing Mecca, and attracts visitors from all over the world. And rightly so, for this former fishing village is brimming with assets. The Washington Post counts it among the world's ten most beautiful coastlines, and with good reason. A few kilometers before reaching the village, the dry tracks and scorched lands of the Nordeste give way to an immense area of Selenite dunes. Further on, a small village and the ocean finally appear, under coconut palms, in a manifest bay of turquoise and marine waters, bordered to the horizon by a lace of dazzling white dunes. No over-tourism here. Everything is wild and unspoilt. On the beach, 1 km away, stands a famous pierced rock through which the sun sets. The inside of this giant stoup is made of yellow or red rocks polished by the sea. The beaches are lined with jangadas, traditional sailboats with ancient shapes and multicolored hulls. Dinghies, pigs roaming freely, horses, carts, buggies, capoeiristas, pretty surfers in sarongs... People climb the dunes to watch the sun set over the ocean, as the bay faces west. The old village remains poor, the houses harmonizing with the earth and trees from which they are made. The inhabitants are Indians or caboclos, former fishermen, lonely and destitute, who have now embarked on the adventure of tourism. May Jeri remain a paradise...
