Founded by the Portuguese in 1534, this city of 225,000 inhabitants is known as a Princesinha do Sul (the Little Princess of the South). This title echoes the architectural splendour of the city, acquired in its heyday when Ilhéus was the world's cocoa capital from the 1880s. In a short time, Ilhéus became the world centre of cocoa production. A title that the city has long since lost. Despite this, you can still see huge plantations in the vicinity of the city (the coastline around Ilhéus is called the Cocoa Coast). At the end of January, percussion and capoeira take over the city.
