The town's oldest church, with numerous paintings and images of black saints on the altars.
Built in 1708 by and for slaves, it is the oldest church in the city. It is made of stone vaults and has many paintings and images of black saints on the altars. Elements of the Catholic religion are mixed with those of African religions, notably Candomblé, an expression of the religious syncretism of the parishioners. One painted black saint, Santo Elesbão, is a black Christian king who lived in Ethiopia in the sixth century.
