LAGOA RODRIGO DE FREITAS
Huge lake surrounded by a secure bike path and home to various sports clubs, including boat regattas and rowing
The Lagoa, after which the eponymous district is named, is an immense 4 km² lake in the middle of the city, separated from the sea by the urbanized spit of land of Ipanema and Leblon. It is bordered by three morros, granite mountains so characteristic of the Carioca landscape: to the east, the mountain overlooking the Gavea district, the Jardim Botânico and the Jockey Club racecourse; to the west, the vertiginous Corcovado mountain leading to Parque Lage, which borders the lagoon; and to the south, the Cantagalo and dos Cabritos morros , which separate it from Copacabana beach. The Humaitá district is often saturated with cars, as it links the Lagoa district to the Zona Norte via Botagofo. It also provides access to Cosmo Velho via the Rebouças tunnel.
The lagoon is fed by the rio Macaco (now canalized) and other small rivers, and is connected to the Atlantic Ocean by an artificial saltwater channel. It has two islands: Piraquê, to the west, named after the lagoon when it was populated by the Tamoios Indians on the arrival of the colonists and home to the city's naval sports club, and Caiçaras, to the south, home to the eponymous sports club. The lagoon is surrounded by a safe bicycle path and boasts other sports clubs, including boat regattas and rowing.
Pollution. For some years now, the Lagoa has been experiencing a serious pollution problem, with the proliferation of an invasive algae that is affecting the entire ecosystem by accelerating the process of eutrophication of the water.
