A rich cultural and historical heritage

Discover the prehistoric, Roman, Arab and medieval remains of the city. This small walled city, 60 km from Palma, was, under the name of Pollentia, the Roman capital of the Balearic Islands in the first century AD, which makes it the oldest city on the island. Once taken from the Phoenicians who founded it, the consul Caecilius Metellus organized it before creating Palma. It was then devastated by the Vandals in the5th century, and a new city was founded by the Moors who gave it its current name, Al Kudia meaning "on top"

The visit can begin with the imposing medieval walls - ordered by King James II. Built at the end of the 13th century, they served to protect the city from the raids of the Turkish pirates who were then rampant throughout the Mediterranean. The erection of these 6-meter high walls took the royal architects and workers more than 60 years to complete. They were redesigned in the 16th and 17th centuries under the reign of King Felipe IV. From this period dates the fortress of Sant Ferran that you can still see today in the Plaza de Toros. We continue with the Roman ruins of Pollentia, the ancient city, founded by the Romans in 123 BC. The site has three areas of interest: the house known as "The Two Treasures", the forum and the Roman theater. The forum contains the foundations of civil and religious buildings, the most important of which is apparently the temple dedicated to the divine triad Jupiter, Juno and Minerva. To learn more about this period, you can also visit the city's Museo Monográfico, which exhibits objects from the Roman era found during excavations in the area and especially at the site of ancient Pollentia. This collection of objects ranges from everyday objects to funerary and aesthetic ornaments, complemented by some large sculptures and other architectural elements.

Why not then discover the Santa Anna oratory dating from the 13th century? This modest building, remodeled at the beginning of the 20th century, consists of a single nave supported by three Gothic arches

A city under the sign of the sun and the sea

Young and old alike will find their happiness in Alcúdia as the possibilities are numerous. To begin with, head for the beach! The bay offers both beautiful coves and large white sandy beaches, all with a climate that is ideal for sailing sports such as kitesurfing or windsurfing. Kayaks, stand-up paddles, snorkels and masks for snorkeling are available for rent everywhere. There is something for everyone, whether you want to be independent or accompanied by a teacher. But water is not the only asset of the island. Nature lovers and hikers will be delighted. Thetourist office proposes for example twelve itineraries: little known paths, forgotten sites, panoramic views of the coast... to better discover the city and its surroundings. And above all, don't forget to look up because more than 200 species of birds (marine, coastal, mountain, wetland...) are present depending on the time of year. To make the most of this nature, there are six routes with infrastructures to better observe and discover the island's birds. To get around, cycling enthusiasts will have the choice between easy and more demanding trails with a difference in altitude, depending on their level. The tourist office will propose 24 itineraries with various levels of difficulty and distances. There are many agencies that offer both active and sporty tourism - often in small groups. Let yourself be tempted by snorkeling, coastering (combining easy climbing on the coast, jumps and swimming). If during the summer season water activities are the main focus, the rest of the year, don't be afraid to discover the interior, in the heart of the Tramontana, to discover the eagles. Or discover the many possibilities of hiking to La Victòria. The website of the tourist office is full of ideas, do not hesitate to discover it. Looking for something more leisurely? Why not take up golf at the Alcanada Golf Club?

After the effort, the comfort!

The culture of a city and a country is also reflected in its gastronomy. Alcúdia will satisfy all gourmets with good restaurants serving excellent wines, fresh fish, various fruits and vegetables... Take the opportunity to discover the multiple tapas of the island while sipping a drink at the beach bars, facing the sea or in the alleys of the old town

An accessible city

The city and the Handisport Foundation have worked for greater accessibility for people with disabilities. For people with reduced mobility, for example, ask the tourist office about the rental of wheelchairs for water sports, surfing and golf!
