In the centre of a beautiful valley in the Tramuntana mountain range, surrounded by strangely shaped limestone rocks and dense forests, Nostra Señora de Lluch is the spiritual centre of the island. Founded in 1250, the monastery is the largest and best known in the Balearic Islands. The building has been transformed several times; the present building dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. Many pilgrims still come here to pray to the Moreneta, a small Gothic statue of the Virgin, made of dark wood, which is displayed in the church. Every year in August, the monastery is the object of a night pilgrimage that takes place on foot from Palma and the surrounding villages.
