It is an impressive mountain range (2,205 m) located in the middle of the Tsavo desert plains. Like the Chyulu Hills, the Taita Hills receive a large amount of rain. This high rainfall, isolation and altitude have allowed the development of an exceptional forest of which not much remains today. To get an idea of what it looked like, you have to go further south, near the village of Rukanga. On the top of a huge rocky dome (Kasigau, 1,640 m), important remnants of primary forests attract scientists and some enthusiasts. But let us return to the Taita Hills. This area, which is difficult to access, has served as a refuge for several ethnic groups, and is now a densely populated and intensively cultivated region. The pretty little town of Wundanyi, nestled at the foot of imposing cliffs, is the capital. It is the starting point for many hikes in the hills. Take a local guide if you don't want to get lost. At the foot of the massif, on the road to Taveta, is the Taita Hills wildlife sanctuary. This private reserve is managed by the Hilton Group, which has built three luxury hotels there. The reserve is a little less arid than Tsavo and the wildlife is more abundant (the minibuses too!). In addition to the crowds, it is also regrettable that the sanctuary is only accessible to lodge guests. Most of the tourists who visit this area are satisfied with the wildlife sanctuary. From Voi, take the road to Taveta (well indicated).
