Nanyuki was established at the beginning of the century by the first white settlers. Favored by a mild climate and the arrival of the railroad, the town quickly prospered and large farms sprang up around it, much to the chagrin of the many wild animals that lived there. Today, many of these ranches have been transformed into wildlife sanctuaries to protect endangered species such as the rhino, and welcome wealthy tourists A little before entering the city, if you are coming from the south, you will cross the equator. Don't worry, you can't miss the exact spot where you will change hemisphere. A large yellow sign will indicate this and a multitude of souvenir shops await the tourists. At the "site" of the equator crossing, you will be offered an experiment that is supposed to demonstrate an effect of the powerful Coriolis force, which affects the direction of circulation of large masses of water and air (it explains, among other things, why many ocean flows turn clockwise in the northern hemisphere and counter-clockwise in the southern hemisphere). A common belief is that this also affects the flow of water in a sink. The volume of water is far too small to be measurable... But for a few shillings, we will give you a (fake) demonstration of this "sink effect". A basin of water in which a small stick is floating is successively placed on one side and then on the other of the equator. It is then observed that the object in question does not rotate in the same direction on either side of the line. It all depends on how the water is poured back into the basin!
