On the banks of the Ucayali River , Pucallpa, "red land" in Quechua, is the first river port of the central selva . Populated for more than a thousand years by the Shipibos and the Cashibos, who gave it the name of Mayusin, "cursed land", the province, which had been living since the foundation of its capital in the 19th century, developed from 1940. The road to Huánuco was built at that time, a road made necessary by the intensive exploitation of the rubber tree... Today, Pucallpa is the second most important Amazonian city, with an industry based on wood extraction, oil and port exchanges. Intensive agriculture has taken over the rainforest closest to the city. In recent years, the city has become much more modern. Pucallpa offers some luxury hotels, but it has also lost much of its identity. During the rainy season and especially between December and March, the rivers overflow and the streets become impassable quagmires. Colorful, full of scents and sounds, Pucallpa is made for an off-the-beaten-track tourism. Many come here attracted by the native culture (Shipibos) and its great mastery of medicinal plants. If you are fond of nature and landscape, prefer the North and Tarapoto or the South and Puerto Maldonado. It is certainly sad, but ecotourism has not been the way of development chosen here. You can reach the city by plane from Lima or from other big cities of the country like Cusco or Arequipa. When you come from Tingo Maria, the road drags in the Cordillera Azul then plunges literally towards the low selva and the canyon of Bosquerón del Padre Abad, in the vertical walls high of more than 1 500 m and in the terrifying peaks. Then waterfalls with evocative names refresh the traveler: Baño del Fraile ("monk's bath"), Velo de la Novia ("bride's veil") or Ducha del Diablo ("devil's shower"). It is also a nice day trip offered from Pucallpa, reaching Aguaytia and then the falls. The capital of the department of Ucayali is located 285 km from Tingo María and 425 km from Huánuco. The climate is hot and humid with abundant rainfall between October and May. The city celebrates San Juan, from June 18 to 24, the Gran Feria Regional with typical dishes and traditional dances, from July 23 to 31, as well as the anniversary of its foundation, from October 5 to 20, without forgetting of course, the Festival del Carnaval Ucayalino in February.
