Capital of the department of Loreto, Iquitos is located in the middle of the forest, 588 km from Pucallpa, but only 370 km from Leticia, in Colombia. The climate is very hot (28°C on average) and very humid. From July to September, the waters recede, revealing welcoming white sand beaches on the three rivers that encircle the city: Rio Nanay, Rio Itaya and Rio Amazonas (the Amazon). It is an amazing city, connected to the rest of the world only by air or river, which makes it enchanting, and it is also the ideal starting point for expeditions into the Amazon rainforest.
