Only 12 km from Trujillo, this seaside resort is relatively quiet and has become very popular with surfers and backpackers from all over the world. On the beach, the photogenic caballitos de totora, "little reed horses", dry out before heading out into the ocean. These small pre-Inca canoes used by fishermen are similar in every way to those of Lake Titicaca, except for their bow which resembles a Venetian gondola. In nearby areas, archaeologists in 2019 found the corpses of 227 sacrificed children, probably as a tribute to the gods in hopes of curbing the El Niño phenomenon. The search continues.
