This fishing port, the most important in the South American Pacific, was established 440 km from Lima, on the remains of the numerous populations that, since time immemorial, have descended from the sierra to the warmer climates of the coast. The "city of the mixed bloods" has undergone a dazzling development, going from 100 inhabitants in 1940 to 340,000 today, thanks to the establishment of fishing, canneries and factories transforming herring into flour. The crisis is driving the city deeper and deeper, and it is constantly bathed in the smell of fish, poverty and filth, a phenomenon accentuated by the tropical heat.
