22 km from Tarapoto, 30 min by car. Located on top of a hill at 1 000 m of altitude, it is the only town of the selva which is not bathed by a river. The population is very mixed and the Indians speak a strange idiom made of Quechua mixed with dialects of the forest. Lamas is built on terraces, which is why it is called the "city of three floors". According to legend, the first floor was inhabited by the people from the south (los chancas or nativos), the second by the mestizos and the last was used as a viewpoint. The difference between the native Indians and the mestizos is still very marked, as shown by the separate patron saint's days.
