Founded on July 25, 1540 by Juan Peréz de Guevara who named it "Santiago de los Ocho Valles de Moyobamba" ("Santiago de los Ocho Valles de Moyobamba"), 2.5 hours drive from Tarapoto, Moyobamba, the capital of the department of San Martin, is the oldest city in the Amazon. It saw the presence of many missionaries on its lands: first the Franciscans in the middle of the 17th century (missions of Trinidad, Concepción, San Luis and San Francisco), then the Jesuits a little later. It is located on the border of two regions: the rugged terrain in the west represents the eastern edge of the Andes (the northern cordillera) and, in the east, the flooded valley is the beginning of the flat jungle (Yurimaguas-Iquitos). City with a pleasant climate (from 25 to 34 °C), although rainy (abundant rains and especially between the months of October and April), it lives in the shelter of high peaks, of which the magic Angaíza where, according to the legend, was buried a fabulous treasure: that is why, some days, the mountain sparkles. The golden age of Moyobamba took place at the end of the 19th century: the straw hat industry, which was exported all over the world (along with rubber), was the only reason why France, Brazil and Germany established a consulate there.Although it is the capital of the region, it is much more peaceful than Tarapoto: between waterfalls, thermal baths, orchids and hummingbirds on parade, its small addresses do not lack charm. It can be a very nice stop along the northern road that leads to Chachapoyas, 6 hours away.
