Located at 2 256 m of altitude, this big town is situated at the end of the Callejón, 65 km from Huaraz. Having resisted better to the earthquake of 1970 than the other towns of the valley, it preserves the undeniable character that give it its narrow streets, its hot and dry climate, its situation between the two cordilleras and the impressive presence of Huandoy culminating at 6 300 m. Known for its mildness ("Caraz, dulzura"), the city can be an excellent base camp for hikers and andinists. Its culinary specialty is the manjar blanco, a delicacy made from milk jam: its reputation for sweetness must be justified!
