This city of the department of Ancash, located at 60 km from Huaraz and 10 km from Caraz, is the one which suffered the most in 1970. Indeed, the earthquake provoked the detachment of the glacier which overhangs the city and the avalanche of ice and mud finished to destroy it, except for the statue of Christ at the entrance of the cemetery and the four palm trees of the Plaza de Armas. At the time, of the 23,000 inhabitants, only 300 children survived in a school located further away. Today, the Campo Santo evokes the memory of the tragedy. Yungay, rebuilt a few hundred meters away, is a perpetual construction site which, one guesses, will never be completed.
