32 km from Huaraz, the small town of Carhuaz Borrachera ("drunkenness"), at an altitude of 2,645 m, has preserved, after the 1970 tragedy, only a few casonas, recalling its former glory. There is little to appreciate apart from its impressive natural setting, except for the small Plaza de Armas with its touching fountain and its new cathedral, which is rather ugly but houses an 18th-century Christ on the Cross, a worthy representative of the Seville school. The festivities of the Virgen de las Mercedes, celebrated in the second half of September, include processions, dances, parades of mythical characters and bullfights.
