Huaraz, 420 km from Lima, is the capital of the department of Ancash. Destroyed almost entirely by the earthquake of 1970 (80 000 deaths), the city continues to heal its wounds and to rebuild itself, without finding its colonial beauty of former days. It is its unique natural setting, in the heart of the Cordillera Blanca, which never ceases to show off its finery, that stops the visitor. It is a good place to stay, but the surrounding lodges, if you can afford it, are much better placed. Among the festivities, the carnival in February or the Festival del Andinismo at the end of June are worth mentioning.
