The confrontations of the 1980s linked to the Shining Path are no longer a bad memory, but the department of Huancavelica remains one of the poorest in Peru. Its history was marked by the mercury mines, of which that of Santa Bárbara today abandoned. It's a pity that this pretty town, set in the mountains at 3 675 m, is so far from the classic tourist route. Located 130 km from Huancayo and 250 km from Ayacucho, Huancavelica deserves to be known for its pedestrian streets, its churches, its folkloric festivals, its thermal baths and its welcoming population. Its nights are cold and a little sad, but its folklore, jealously preserved by the descendants of the indigenous people subjected to the obligatory work in the mines, remains alive. The Danza de las Tijeras is the quintessence of it: dressed in heavy shiny costumes, the dancers compete, scissors in hand, with technical prowess and acrobatics.
