It is in this city of 60 000 souls, 21 km from the departmental capital, that in 1882 a bitter battle was fought against the Chileans. The pretty Plaza de Armas, with its 18th century fountain and its araucanas (tree symbol of Chile and of the Araucania region!), has kept its colonial style of the sierra. The neoclassical cathedral suffered from the 1947 earthquake, but not the Casa Ugarte León, on the same Plaza de Armas, which, with its neoclassical facade from the beginning of the 20th century, its tiled roof, its patio, its gardens and its orchard, is the best preserved of the valley.
