On the edge of an immense sea of fresh water, perched at an altitude of 3,827 m, Puno is the capital of the Altiplano, and of the department of Puno. It enjoys a cold and dry climate (annual average of 8°C), with abundant rainfall and often snow from November to April. The city and the lake are supported by hills where the cultivated terraces (potatoes, corn or quinoa) are green. The population here is three quarters indigenous, mostly descended from the Tiahuanaco culture, which brings it closer to the Bolivians with whom it shares the lake and the Aymara language. For Lake Titicaca, for its Altiplano landscape and also for its handicrafts, the region of Puno is a must-see destination. On the other hand, one makes quickly the turn of the city which does not have the charm of Arequipa or Cusco but it keeps an authentic side, a little indifferent to the flood of tourists
