A vast defensive structure comprising some twenty fortresses in Horta.

Attacked by pirates on numerous occasions, between the 16th and 17th centuries Horta undertook the construction of a vast defensive structure, consisting of some twenty fortresses erected here and there in the bay. While most have now disappeared, there are (fortunately) a few precious remnants of this era, such as the Porto Pim Gate and São Sebastião Castle. Near the marina, the Santa Cruz Fort dates from the same period.
