After Porto Formoso, the road passes through São Brás, then continues to Maia, a quiet fishing village. A good option for lunchtime: head for the headland, the Miradouro do Fràde and its well-equipped picnic area. There's a fine view of the coastline, including a waterfall that plunges straight into the sea, just as you'd find on Madeira. For an even closer view, go to the end of the Travessa da Rua de Santa Catarina, which runs from the central square; there's no parking, it's just the end of the street, but then you can turn right and join the road to Lomba da Maia.
